MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; or

Six (6) months of experience as an Environmental Specialist I or higher with the State of Florida; or

One (1) year of experience in environmental protection, regulation, public health, or food safety; one of the physical or natural sciences; agriculture; or engineering.

Requires possession of a valid Class E Driver License.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position has regulatory responsibilities and is subject to the provisions of s. 112.313, Florida Statutes, and Section 60L-36.003, Florida Administrative Code.

Moderate travel required.

Must obtain State Standardization Certification within six months of appointment.

JOB DUTIES:

Inspects and evaluates shellfish processing facilities for license certification under appropriate state and federal regulations. Determines whether sanitary conditions comply with regulations. Collects and ships water and meat samples to central laboratory for analysis when appropriate. Provides technical assistance and educational outreach to the shellfish industry. Reviews Shellfish Processing Certification applications.

Prepares electronic and/or written reports of inspections and sample collections.

Conducts food-borne illness investigations in conjunction with other government agencies.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the terminology and principles of molluscan shellfish public health protection.
  • Knowledge of aseptic sample collection techniques.
  • Knowledge of the National Shellfish Sanitation Program Model Ordinance, Rule 5L-1 Florida Administrative Code, and ability to evaluate processing plant compliance with both the Model Ordinance and Rule 5L-1 by conducting routine on-site inspections.
  • Ability to maintain FDA State Standardization certification.
  • Ability to collect, evaluate and summarize information.
  • Ability to prepare technical reports.
  • Ability to understand and follow legislative policy direction as established in Florida Statutes.
  • Ability to interact with the public, coworkers and other local, state or federal employees in a tactful, courteous and professional manner at all times.
  • Ability to effectively work independently as well as cooperatively with coworkers.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate personal work schedules.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively through all written and spoken means.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to utilize problem-solving techniques at all times.
